The SBCF Symposium on the Cell Biology of Eukaryogenesis, and beyond! Do not miss the 2026 annual “Cell Biology of…” series (February 3)

After the success of previous "Cell Biology of..." editions, the French Society for Cell Biology will confront the central issue: the origin of the eukaryotic cell. Save the date! you won’t want to miss it.

The symposium "The Cell Biology of Eukaryogenesis and Beyond" will be held on February 3rd, 2026 at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, and welcome a great lineup of speakers: Buzz Baum, Thibaut Brunet , Yohan Decelle, Morgan Gaïa, Sven Gould, Purification Lopez Garcia and Andela Saric.

The origin of eukaryotic cells, or eukaryogenesis, remains one of the most fundamental and debated questions in cell and evolutionary biology. Several hypotheses have emerged to explain the origin of hallmark features such as the nucleus, mitochondria, endomembrane system, and dynamic cytoskeleton, as well as the evolution of the thousands of genes that support these systems. The mosaic nature of the eukaryotic genome and cellular machinery, shaped by contributions from various prokaryotic sources, challenges linear evolutionary models and propels the field of research in increasingly interdisciplinary directions.

We will share the latest findings on the role of Asgard archaea, emerging models of symbiosis, mechanisms of gene integration, and the evolution of cellular metabolism and division. Attention will be given to the evolution and diversification of eukaryotic membranes, informed by new insights from lipidomics and structural biology but also to the ongoing discovery of novel microbial lineages potentially even closer to the ancestral archaeal host or mitochondrial progenitor.

Together, these advances will certainly help refining our understanding of the Last Eukaryotic Common Ancestor (LECA) and unravel one of life’s most profound evolutionary transitions.

In addition, 8 abstracts will be selected for short talks for exciting discussions along the day! Note that the dead line for Abstract submission is November 19th.

Don't hesitate to register here before December 20th ! the meeting will be held in a hybrid format (virtual/in-person).

Isabelle Florent, Yvon Jallais, Etienne Morel, Thibaut Brunet and Isabelle Tardieux
