Reminder : Join us for the next exciting SBCF “Cell biology of…” Join us as we dive into the mystery of eukaryogenesis — a journey into how complex life began ! Save the date: February 3rd and mark it in your agenda!

In 2026, the French Society for Cell Biology will confront the central issue: the origin of the eukaryotic cell. you won’t want to miss it.

The symposium “The Cell Biology of Eukaryogenesis and Beyond” will be held on February 3rd, 2026 at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. We’re thrilled to welcome an exceptional lineup of speakers who will bring fresh insights, bold ideas, and cutting-edge research to the stage: Buzz Baum, Thibaut Brunet , Yohan Decelle, Morgan Gaïa, Sven Gould, Virginie Hamel, Nicole King, Purification Lopez Garcia, Andela Saric.

The origin of eukaryotic cells — eukaryogenesis — remains one of the biggest mysteries in biology. How did key features like the nucleus, mitochondria, and dynamic cytoskeleton first emerge, and how did the genes behind them evolve? The mosaic nature of the eukaryotic genome keeps challenging simple evolutionary models and driving new interdisciplinary discoveries.

This symposium will spotlight cutting-edge research on Asgard archaea, new symbiosis models, gene integration, and the evolution of metabolism, membranes, and cell division. We’ll also explore newly identified microbial lineages that may lie even closer to the ancestral host or mitochondrial progenitor. A highlight of this edition: breakthroughs in super-resolution imaging, now powerful enough to visualize these tiny and elusive microbes with stunning detail — offering unprecedented clues to the earliest steps of complex life

In addition, 5 abstracts will be selected for short talks for exciting discussions along the day! Note that the dead line for Abstract submission has now been extended to November 26th.

Don’t hesitate to register here as soon as possible ! the meeting will be held in a hybrid format (virtual/in-person). Find the preliminary progam here

Isabelle Florent, Yvon Jallais, Etienne Morel, Thibaut Brunet and Isabelle Tardieux
